Char Koey Teow @ Peace Hotel, Taiping, Perak

So I've been bugging hubby about eating at Peace Hotel (Restaurant), they serve really great roast duck & fried pork here. We did go, but it was late in the afternoon, and the duck rice stall had closed by then. And so, we settled for char koey teow.

The old uncle who does the cooking.

We ordered a fried koey teow-bihun combo (I think it cost RM2-something). Cheap! It was done in the Taiping style which was wetter than the Penang style. Still good, though nothing really compares to Penang Char Koey Teow.

A 3-bam!

Robson Heights Seafood Restaurant, Off Federal Highway, Kuala Lumpur

It was hubby's birthday (I'm so late in blogging this) and we went for a meal at one of our favourite restaurants with granduncle and family. There were 6 of us that night.

We tried to eat healthy :D, so stir fried crunchy asparagus it was (RM12.00).

And of course, our usual favourite, the four heavenly king vegetables (RM15.00) in sambal belacan.
8 succulent slices of their signature baked spare ribs in honey sauce at RM72.00. This is my most favourite dish at this restaurant.
We tried their deep fried butter squid (RM15.00), good, but I still prefer their version of deep fried salted egg yolk sotong, alot tastier.
Since hubby loves steamed fish, we had a very expensive carp fish dish (RM104.00) steamed in Teochew style. It actually cost RM60.00/kg. It was super fresh, but methinks a tad too expensive for a fresh water fish. But never mind, it was hubby's birthday!

The meal cost RM229.00 for the 6 of us, inclusive of Chinese tea.

Damansara Village Steamboat Restaurant, Kampung Sungai Kayu Ara, Petaling Jaya

The Damansara Village Steamboat Restaurant website boasts of this place to be "First of its kind steamboat restaurant featuring "live" Pulau Ketam seafood. Fish, crabs, prawns, scallops, clams. All 'live'. All fresh."

This restaurant is nestled in the residential area of Damansara Jaya. We had a small departmental gathering here the other day, which took up 2 tables.
We started off with some chicken satay for appetiser.
And a pile of delicious deep fried chicken wings, which went very well with the sweet chilli sauce.

Also tried the deep fried dumplings. Crunchy goodness.

I don't usually eat pak cham kai (steamed silky chicken), but this one was covered with a fragrant soya sauce gravy and deep fried onions/garlic, so I had a go. Very nicely done, if I may so.

And now, the steamboat ingredients. This was the secret to great tasting steamboat stock; Chinese wine and lots of herbs!

Ma yau fish, super fresh, shiny and sweet.

Taiwan pomfret, also super fresh and tasty.

Crab sticks.

Clams.
Pretty flower crabs.
My favourite, quail eggs.

Egg noodles and chicken eggs.

Mussles, scallops and abalone slices.
An assortment of fish-paste-based ingredients, dumplings and balls.

Boil all, and feast! Our two tables (around 15 persons) paid a total of RM525 (if memory serves me right). Quite pricey for steamboat, but considering the very fresh ingredients and the lovely herbal wine broth, it was worth the money.

A solid 3-bam for its fresh food and cosy tropical ambiance.

Roast Duck @ Restoran Sun Ming, Cheras, Kuala Lumpur

This place is featured in one of our food guide books and since we venture to Cheras a fair bit, it was only a matter of time before we checked Sun Ming out. Apparently, this restaurant is touted for serving the best roast duck in Cheras.

That's the restaurant, taking up two shoplots.

They sell an assortment of ready-cooked dishes too, beside the roast meats.

We ordered the watercress soup, RM3.50 for a small bowl. It was really tiny, not quite worth the amount paid.

We selected the char siew, siew yoke and roast duck combo (RM20) for 2 persons. Of the 3 types of meat, the char siew was the best. Caramelised-moist and smoky, with charred edges, it rates among the top char siew we've ever eaten, almost comparable to Meng Kee.

Same platter, from another view. The siew yoke was pretty good too; crispy skin with a melt-in-your-mouth quality. The duck, to me, was good but not exceptional. It lacked the crispyness that personifies what, to me, is the best roast duck at Sunrise.

The gravy for the duck.

Our bill came up to RM26.50 for the two of us. I would say Sun Ming serves great roast meats, but the duck here is somewhat overated.

A solid 3-bam for the char siew and siew yoke.

Hawker food near FGA Church, Off Jalan Kuchai Lama, Kuala Lumpur

At night, near the FGA Church, there is a thriving row of hawker stalls doing brisk business with customers dining al fresco and on the five-foot-way of shophouses.

We decided to check out the strip, and hubby decided on the Cao Cao BBQ lamb (RM7.00). I tried it, and it was way too fatty and "smelly" for my taste.

I had the wantan mee (RM4.00), and it was ok, lardy-tasting sauce, springy noodles.

The wantan.
Hubby also had the prawn noodles (RM5.00) for which this place is famous. He rather enjoyed it.
We shared a leng chee kang (RM1.50) which was basically tinned longans mixed with boiled dried longan water (air mata kucing). Nothing to shout about here.

I would rate this place as a decent hawker area to have a quick bite. 3 bams.

Restoran Tangkak Beef Noodles, Jalan Imbi, Kuala Lumpur

Hubby made a quick pit stop at this restaurant after a recent trip to the Berjaya Times Square Mall in KL.

He ordered the house specialty of course, beef koey teow noodle soup (RM7.90). I had a taste, and the soup was rather peppery and the meat, tender.

Wantan Mee @ S.E.A. Park Petaling Jaya

Hubby discovered this stall quite by accident. And since it was always crowded, hubby decided to take me here to check it out together. The stall has no name and no signage.

It's on the road perpendicular to Ayamas, facing the residential houses. At night, the tables and chairs would be lined up on the road and filled. The night we were there, a crowd was lining up to tapau.

The man on the left is what makes this wantan mee stall special. He put on quite a performance for patrons, tossing the blanched wantan noodles high (2 to 3 metres) into the air and catching it with his netted ladle, repeatedly. He was constantly on the move, almost as if he were performing a dance as he cooked the noodles.

The stall is next to this motor shop.

I ordered the wantan mee soup version (RM4.00).

While hubby ordered the dry wantan mee noodles with....

....a side serving of char siew and siew yoke, which totalled up to RM8.00.

The noodles were springy and the wantan tasty, and the performance, entertaining. Good to check it out if you're in the neighbourhood.

This roadside wantan mee stall is at the start of the inclined road of Jalan 21/22, S.E.A Park.

3-bams it is!

Just Dessert, The Curve, Petaling Jaya

Hungry after our weekly Tesco foray (yay!), we went for a quick bite here. Just Dessert - the name sounded interesting enough. Well, abit of a misnomer actually, since they do serve other things besides desserts.

I ordered the Fragrant Spicy Chicken with steamed rice (RM8.50). It wasn't spicy, very mild in taste, actually.

Hubby had the Seoul Shin Ramen (RM9.80).....which looked alot like maggi mee with an egg and ham slices! Tasted just ok.

We shared a bubur cha cha (RM3.00) which was very diluted and insufficiently sweet. It also did not have any chewy glutinuous bits. What a disappointment.

The bill came up to RM24.00 for the two of us. Well, all I can say is that we won't be revisiting this place anytime soon!
